MONTREAL (CCN) — Bishop Pierre Goudreault has been chosen the new president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Goudreault, Bishop of Sainte -Anne-de-la-Pocatiere since 2017, was elected at the bishops’ annual plenary, which wrapped up today in Montreal. Born in Rouyn-Noranda, Que., the 62-year-old was ordained to the priesthood in 1991.
Joining Goudreault on the bishops’ Executive Committee and Permanent Council as vice president is Archbishop Donald Bolen of Regina. The 64-year-old Bolen has been a bishop since 2009 and has led the Prairie archdiocese since 2016.
Co-treasurers are, for the English Sector, Saskatoon Bishop Mark Hagemoen, and Saint-Hyacinthe Bishop Christian Rodembourg for the French Sector.
Elected to the permanent council was St. John’s Archbishop Peter Hundt, Valleyfield Bishop Alain Faubert, Peterborough Bishop Daniel Miehm and Winnipeg Archbishop Murray Chatlain.
To ensure equal numbers from the French and English Sector of the CCCB, Bishops Guy Desrochers and Pierre-Olivier Tremblay were re-elected as sectoral representatives from the French Sector.
The remaining members of the Permanent Council include include four permanent ex officio members: Cardinal Francis Leo of Toronto, Quebec City’s Cardinal Gérald Lacroix, Montreal Archbishop Christian Lépine and Archbishop Lawrence Huculak, Metropolitan Archbishop of Winnipeg for Ukrainian Catholics.
