Journalists from three continents hit Toronto’s streets

Canadian Catholic News held its first Catholic journalism summer seminar in Toronto, Aug. 10-16, called “God in the City.” Journalists and aspiring journalists from three continents and five countries participated. They learned about the ins and outs of Catholic journalism and hit the streets of Toronto to bring back excellent reports on church and faith in the city.

“We are not here to work for God, but to work with God,” said one participant. Watch this video to learn more.

‘We’re a sign, not a solution’: Poverello builds family for Toronto’s homeless

Through faith, charity, community and professional care, Poverello Charities in Toronto has been providing people with mental illness who were previously homeless a caring place to call home for decades.

“When life’s most essential needs — love and belonging — are met, mental illness can begin to heal,” says the director, Father Peter Poel, ofm cap.

Ministry among the homeless fights dehumanization, ‘transforms lives’

When Lucio Abbruzzese found a man dying on a street in downtown Toronto, it shattered him and led him to change his life. What followed was a 30-year journey of faith, service and walking alongside those who are homeless through the summer Street Patrol ministry. “It’s about walking with them, supporting them, and letting God transform all of us,” he says.
